Asur – the Illusionist: As mentioned earlier, Asur is another attendant of Varun. The energy field lying North of Varun in the West direction is Asur. In Vedas, Asur has been referred to as the governor of ‘Maya’.

‘Maya’ is the wisdom of Varun. Asur is the controller which governs that wisdom. So he is the adheeshtha dev of ‘Mayavi’ power. Asur also gives spirituality. All the negative powers, the opponents of God, people with fighting spirit are, basically, Asur. Yet he is an attendant of Varun only.

All the evil (‘danvi’, ‘asuri’, ‘mayavi’) and divine (‘Daiviya’) powers fall under his purview. He also gives spiritual depth. When a person, out of realization of futility, explores the depth of spirituality, at that time the power which makes him realize the futility is of Asur; it is not divine (‘daiviya’).

Devas always lure you; they give ego and savor but Asur makes it savour-less. That is why Asur, attendant of Varun, helps in releasing the mind from temptations and false hope and in moving on a divine spiritual path.
